Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

NAFLD is a medical condition in which the liver accumulates an excessive amount of fat. The insidious disease broods inside the liver without showing any considerable symptoms till the early-to-mid stages. Such fat accumulation can cause a lot of irritation to the liver cells. And if left untreated, the disease can further cause liver scarring. Without proper medical treatment, the condition can intensify and lead to liver cancer.

What are the main causes of NAFLD?

NAFLD is mainly caused due to excess consumption of sugar in the table sugar or Carbohydrates form. The liver converts this excess sugar in the body into fat. It gets converted into fat through a process popularly known as hepatic DNL. DNL stands for De Novo Lipogenesis. 

The IIT Mandi research team under the guidance of Dr. Prosenjit Mandal are now focused on developing therapeutics for the medical condition. It will take some time for them to come up with the therapeutics in the long run. They published the findings of the study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
